They came up with lots of tasty ideas

Friday 13 February 2026 Year 2 - Children's Mental Health Week This year’s theme for Mental Health Week is ‘This is our place’. To celebrate this, we swapped classes and completed lots of activities about the places where we belong. We started by learning the song ‘This is me’ from The Greatest Showman. We discussed how the characters felt like they didn’t belong because they were different and people treated them differently. After singing the song, we realised that their uniqueness was what made them special. In the end, we could see that they had found ‘their place’ where they felt like they belonged. In the other classes, we had chance to practise some meditation strategies and draw our special places where we feel safe and where we belong.

Thursday 12 February 2026 Year 2 Orienteering Year 2 have been developing their map skills. Children were given a map of the school grounds which included some obscure images. With a partner, they used the map to locate the landmarks and record what they actually were. They used terminology they had learnt, such as north, south, east and west as they undertook the challenge.

Monday 9 February 2026 Year 2 Art Week - John Dyer This week we have been focusing on artist John Dyer. We started by learning about John Dyer and looking through some of his art work. In small groups we discussed what we thought of each of the pieces. We noticed that his paintings contained bright colours and many of them were set near the sea. We chose our favourite John Dyer painting and practised carefully sketching birds, boats and daffodils in our sketchbooks. Using our colour mixing skills we mixed a variety of bright and eye-catching colours to use on our own John Dyer inspired pieces. We chose our favourite 4 colours and evaluated them to say why we liked them the most. We then replicated our favourite creations onto cartridge paper and stuck them onto a blue wash background to create our own John Dyer painting.

Thursday 4 December 2025 Year 2 Careers Related Learning This afternoon we were lucky enough to have a visit from Mark who works at the NHS. He came to speak to us about the vital work that the NHS do to help people. We discussed some of the important jobs that people in the NHS do before thinking about what it is like to work in a hospital. We shared with him our knowledge of Florence Nightingale and he told us about how hospitals have changed since the Victorian era. These changes included cleanliness, uniforms and knowledge of medicines. Some of us even got to try on the uniforms!

Monday 24 November 2025 Year 2 DT - Bread Tasting/Making In Year 2 we started our new DT topic, all about bread. We started by briefly looking at the process of making bread and mapped out where different breads came from all over the world. We then taste tested different breads such as brioche, wholemeal and pitta bread. We discussed their shapes, sizes, tastes and textures and looked at how each bread was used in the culture that it came from. Later on in the term, we were lucky enough to make some fresh bread rolls ourselves. We used design sheets to figure out which ingredients and equipment we would need, and then set to work creating our bread rolls! Once they had cooled down, we taste tested them. We completed an evaluation sheet which helped us identify what went well during our bread roll making and things we could improve on next time.

Monday 20 October 2025 Year 2 Art Week This week we created a beautiful Winter Scene. We started by exploring colour and how to make as many tones of one colour as possible using white. We then painted a winter sunset starting with white, progressing to dark purple. To improve our sketching and cutting skills we drew a winter tree using a template and very carefully cut it out. Next, we stuck the tree on to our winter sunset to create a silhouette and discussed the effect of light and dark. Finally, we sketched a fox, cut it out and stuck it on the foreground of our winter scene.
