Tuesday 20 January 2026 Year 1 Problem Solving with RICE Today we spent time learning how to tackle word problems using RICE! We began by carefully reading the problem and identifying the important and helpful information. We learnt to recognise what ‘R’ stands for in a word problem. R = Read and Record. We then read through a selection of addition and subtraction problems together. We read, highlighted and identified what operation we needed to do to solve them. We worked like Maths Detectives…. What am I looking for? Numbers? Words? Which words are the important ones? We finished the lesson highlighting some problems and identifying whether we needed to write ‘add’ or ‘take away’ when we worked through the ‘R’ for RICE. We made a great start at tackling word problems today!

Monday 19 January 2026 Year 1 Traditional Tales - The Magic Porridge Pot Today, we started our Traditional Tales unit. We were introduced to ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’. We acted out the story and talked about what it would be like if the whole school was full of porridge! To help us remember the key quotes, we ate porridge saying, “Cook little pot, cook!” When our tummies were full we said, “Stop little pot, stop!”

Friday 16 January 2026 Year 1 - An Unplanned Power Cut! Today we had an unplanned power cut at around 11am. This made it really tricky to carry on with our normal day because as we discussed – electricity powers lots of things! We took the opportunity to have a class chat about how we could resolve one of the really BIG issues, which was the Kitchen Staff not being able to cook us lunch! We came up with quite a lot of solutions as to how we could make sure everyone had a lunch. Mrs Carlock went to Tesco and bought some bread, cheese, ham and chocolate rolls! Typically at midday the power came back on, however we thoroughly enjoyed our class picnic!

Tuesday 13 January 2026 Year 1 Toys Take Over! Today, we came into class after our toys had a sleepover in Year 1. When we arrived, we couldn’t believe our eyes… Our toys had been SO naughty and taken over! We looked at and discussed the clues left behind to work out what mischief they'd been up to in the night. We discovered that they'd played with the pom poms, helped themselves to a snack, scribbled on the white boards, read a story, and even took some selfies using the photocopier! We had to let Mrs Carlock know, so we wrote her a recount of the events that took place. We created some lovely pieces of writing, and created some amazing portraits of our toys in Art!

Tuesday 16 December 2025 Year 1 Science - Waterproof or Absorbent? Today we explored two new scientific words - ‘waterproof’ and ‘absorbent'. We conducted a fair test to discover the properties of four different types of material, and discussed which material we felt would make the best umbrella. We found that metal and plastic were waterproof, and following discussion, decided that plastic would make the best umbrella because it can be dyed or see-through (transparent). We thoroughly enjoyed experimenting!

Friday 12 December 2025 Year 1 DT - Christmas Biscuits Today we made Christmas biscuits! First, we talked about how to be safe when cooking and we created a list of rules to follow. After that we got into our groups and began to bake. We carefully measured out the ingredients using scales. Then we put the ingredients altogether in the small bowl. Next we rubbed the ingredients together to make crumbs and balled the dough together. Then we had to roll the dough out gently using a rolling pin. We selected our cutter that we chose when designing and cut our biscuits. Finally, we put them on a tray ready to be put in the oven. They smelt delicious!

Wednesday 12 November 2025 Year 1 Cinema Trip Today we went to the cinema! We watched Smurfs and had the best time. This helped us in our English lessons to write a recount of our adventures.
-
Monday 10 November 2025 Year 1 PSHE - Feelings (Sadness) Today we talked about the emotion sadness. We linked this to the well known film “Inside Out”. We first discussed what makes us sad (such as unkind hands, not sharing etc.) After that, we watched a clip of Inside Out where Bing-Bong was sad. Joy couldn’t cheer him up with her happiness, however Sadness cheered him up by listening and talking about his problems. She even gave him a hug. We then discussed ways to deal with our friends or others being sad.
-
Monday 3 November 2025 Year 1 Art Week - Kandinsky In Year 1 we have been learning about the Russian abstract artist, Wassily Kandinsky. He believed bright warm colours made people feel happy and cool colours made people feel calm. We first looked at some of his artwork and discussed what we liked about it. We completed a Walking Gallery where we walked around the classroom and discussed what we liked about his work. We learnt about the shapes and colours that Kandinsky uses. There were lots of triangles and circles and we even learnt about trapeziums! We coloured in his artwork, thinking about the colours and shapes. We made a replica of Kandinsky’s most famous piece ‘Circles’. We had to use a range of contrasting colours to create lots and lots of circles. We then painted the square to create a background colour.

Friday 17 October 2025 Year 1 Fashion Show Year 1 have been looking at clothes from different eras - pupils were asked to come to school dressed in either a 1900's, 1950's, or 1970's costume. We also enjoyed a fashion show in the afternoon where parents came to watch! Walking down the catwalk and showing off our amazing costumes was so much fun!

Friday 19 September 2025 Year 1 Autumn Walk Today we explored our school grounds looking for signs of Autumn. We noticed the air was much cooler and some things in nature were changing. We hunted for different colour leaves and observed the different trees that were just beginning to change colours. We talked about the parts of a tree - naming the trunk, branches, twigs and bark. We also talked about things we found such as helicopter seeds, conkers, berries and brambles. We will spend the next month being ‘Season Detectives’ and trying to spot changes that are happening all around us!
